Residency Statement:

The 2018 Indiana Dunes National Park Artist-in-Residence program provided a homecoming of sorts for Noblesville, IN oil painter Michael Janosky. Born and raised in Michigan City, IN, the influence of the dunes and beaches of the Lake Michigan shoreline is evident in his work. Michael began painting in Michigan City as a youth and has returned for several short visits since leaving the area. For the past twenty years, Michael’s work has been dominated by the landscape of central Indiana. His residency provided the opportunity to immerse himself in the dunes environment and reconnect with the landscape of his youth.

To truly capture the essence of a subject, Michael believes you must paint what you know and understand. The time to explore, observe, and contemplate was the foremost purpose of his residency. Michael had the opportunity to gather reference material which will provide a limitless source of inspiration and has begun working on a series of paintings from his experience. He is looking forward to seeing its influence in his work and to share, from an artist’s perspective, the unique and distinctive characteristics of the dunes environment.

"As a landscape painter, being a Hoosier is paramount in my work. The Indiana landscape offers not only a variety and complexity of environments, but also opportunities to experience the simple and often understated beauty of our surroundings. This provides for limitless sources of inspiration. While finding daily prompts to create around my home of over a decade in Central Indiana, I continue to be called to the scenes of my childhood, the shores of Lake Michigan."

Over the years, I have enjoyed many summer days in Saugatuck, Michigan along the Kalamazoo River and the Shore of Lake Michigan. Saugatuck is a wonderful arts community, has great dining and retail establishments, and features a picturesque beach - Oval Beach. Oval Beach is the setting of most of the paintings in this gallery.

"I am inspired by the colors, shapes, atmosphere, and seasonal changes that I see in the Indiana landscape. I strive to remain truthful to my subject while looking to emphasize that which makes it unique, interesting, and worthy of being documented in a painting. Throughout the painting process, I also appreciate the feeling of the paint coming off the brush and the rhythms and motion of working across the canvas. Through this, I strive to capture the mood of the scene and relay a sense of place."

I started painting smaller scale pieces a few years ago. These are popular as gifts, especially during the holidays when many galleries have miniature exhibitions. They are also well-suited for beginning collectors and those with limited space. I especially like the square format and settled on 6" x 6" as my go-to miniature size. These are oil on canvas panels in 2-1/2" wide plein air style frames in an espresso or gold finish.

A dominate sky has been a central theme in my work for many years. This new series began in late 2017 has a particular emphasis on the sky, quite often as the primary subject. These 9" x 12" oil on canvas paintings are framed in plein air style, gallery quality frames.

“The Promenade Series” is an ongoing series of oil paintings depicting the subtle and fleeting beauty of the Indiana landscape on the fringe of development. Its purpose is not only to document and bring attention to these fragile and often unnoticed pockets of nature, but also to provide an affordable option for those interested in acquiring and collecting original local art.
These works are an artist’s personal response to a promenade, a walk through the landscape, taking the time to experience and then express a sense of place. As the series progresses, the effects of weather, season, time of day, and the simple passing of time will allow the unique and varying characteristics of our local landscape to unfold.
Each piece in “The Promenade Series” can stand alone or as part of a grouping. The 9 x 12 canvases are framed in a simple black floater style frame and are being offered at a special price of $150.

UPDATE October, 2017

This series is now discontinued as the landscapes have changed. As such, this series has fulfilled its purpose. Several nice examples are still available and, even though my art is selling for more than a few years ago, I am leaving this series at a value price of $150 each.

At times, other subjects demand my attention. On occasion, I will produce work themed specifically for an exhibition, a special event, or a commission. Sometimes, I just feel like doing something a little different.
